Hardcover - 256 pages (November 1998)
An opinionated, breezy book of wisdom telling how to find and buy a cruising boat, save enough money to quit your job and sail over the horizon, and successfully manage seamanship, finances, and the cruising life. Offers a five-year plan to go cruising, even for the reader who hasn't yet saved much money and doesn't yet own a boat. Trefethen shows why buying the boat is the last thing to do; saving money is the first. With its commonsense advice on living frugally, avoiding credit card debt, and saving with discipline, this book is, in its early chapters, as much about achieving an alternative, back-to-basics lifestyle as it is about sailing. Trefethen's message is that anyone who is willing to sacrifice a measure of comfort and security can achieve the freedom of the cruising life. Witty and insightful enough to carve fresh space on any bookshelf.

Paperback Reprint edition (April
1996)
Few lives of great men offer so much interest--and so many mysteries--as the life of Charles Darwin, the greatest figure of nineteenth-century science, whose ideas are still inspiring discoveries and controversies more than a hundred years after his death. Yet only now, with the publication of Voyaging, the first of two volumes that will constitute the definitive biography, do we have a truly vivid and comprehensive picture of Darwin as man and as scientist. Drawing upon much new material, supported by an unmatched acquaintance with both the intellectual setting and the voluminous sources, Janet Browne has at last been able to unravel the central enigma of Darwin's career: how did this amiable young gentleman, born into a prosperous provincial English family, grow into a thinker capable of challenging the most basic principles of religion and science? The dramatic story of Voyaging takes us from agonizing personal challenges to the exhilaration of discovery; we see a young, inquisitive Darwin gradually mature, shaping, refining, and finally setting forth the ideas that would at last fall upon the world like a thunderclap in The Origin of Species. by Kevin J. Donnelly

Price: $17.95
Paperback - 192 pages (June 1997)
Cruising 101 serves as both a reality check and a teaser for those who have ever dreamed of charting their own course, pulling up anchor, and setting sail into the sunset. The authors take us through their experiences of preparing their 30-foot sloop, Free Fall, for a 16-month cruise along the west coast of Mexico. "Of the dozens of books we have read, only a few touch on what we now consider the most important piece of equipment a dreamer-turned-doer can take aboard, a positive and flexible attitude." The authors provide insights like this as they explore important considerations such as on-board relationships, options for budget cruisers, getting the vessel ready for departure, equipping the vessel, food provisioning, and cruising etiquette.

Here's the fantasy: lots of people dream of sailing the world without a care. And here's the reality: hesitant partners scuttle the vast majority of these reveries. Casey's genial primer, born out of the clash between his own sea legs and his wife's preference for land, is, essentially, a guide for sailing couples, but it addresses issues faced by anyone a little antsy about hoisting anchor. And with gentle, encouraging, and useful advice, it casts doubt off the end of the gangplank.

I can't say enough nice things about this book. It doesn't pretend to be a comprehensive
guidebook on all aspects of cruising, but is rather an indepth examination of the true
essentials. Just about any topic you can think of is covered, with new and insightful
thoughts on what works and what doesn't, as well as how to make cruising less technical,
less expensive, less dependant on the chandlery and shore-side services in general. If you
want in your heart to set off without a radio, without an engine, without radar, Loran,
GPS, pressure showers or a microwave, and have been looking for very good reasons for
doing so, then this is your book. Not only are these ideas mentioned in detail, but you'll
see that lots of people sail a long way with very little fuss and expense, and have a
wonderful, safe, and fulfilling time doing it

Through
the Spyglass : A Sailor Looks at Cruising & Tells What & Why
by Anne M. Hays
Our
Price: $14.95
Paperback (October 1995)
There are several ways to plumb the essence of boat cruising: go cruising, read about people who cruise, read books that tell you how to cruise. Anne M. Hays book, Through the Spyglass, gives the reader the intuitive insights that embody the spirit of cruising. This is the Zen of cruising; not an orderly list of things to do; not a progression of thought to prepare the prepare the boater, but rather the philosophy of cruising, the unexpressed desires and the most deep-seated search of pioneering minds. Some of cruising is euphoric ("The view we marveled at that evening -- sparkling water studded with rocky islands, mountains in the distance backlit by a rising full moon -- was indescribably beautiful..."); some of cruising is rough and life-threatening ("...we ate and drank little, hung on grimly, and wedged ourselves into our wet bunks to try to sleep when off-watch. No one aboard thought those three days were fun..."). At first the book appears to be disjointed, with real life experiences and fictional accounts scattered in a disparate and random telling, but when you finish you realize there is an awakening spirit, a middle journey under moonless nights when the single-handed sailor feels the spirit of the creator, and the closing of a (sailor's) life.
